Duties & Responsibilities of the Common Pleas Court-General Division:

Judge Smith's job responsibilities include overseeing the operation of the Sandusky County Juvenile Detention Center and a staff of 40 professionals, including Deputy Clerks, Juvenile Probation Officers, and Detention Officers.

In his judicial role he makes findings of facts and issues orders in child protection actions involving abused, neglected and dependent children; as well as paternity, child custody, and termination of parental rights cases. He presides over misdemeanor criminal charges involving adults whose actions contribute to the delinquency or unruliness of a child. He also presides over cases involving delinquent and unruly children, juvenile traffic offenders and hears cases referred to the Sandusky County Family Drug Court.

Judge Smith also works with his staff of professionals to develop, operate* and/or utilize effective programs such as, The Genesis Program, Youth Works Community Service & Victim Restitution Program, Parenting Education, Family Drug Court, Juvenile Drug Court, Truancy Supervision Program, and Drug Testing through the Sandusky County TASC Program.

* The operations of all programs developed by Judge Smith and his staff are currently funded through State grant funds and not County General Fund dollars.


Duties & Responsibilities of the Common Pleas Court Probate Division:

Judge Smith's job responsibilities include overseeing the operation of the Sandusky County Probate Court and its staff of Deputy Clerks.

In his judicial role he oversees the administration of decedent's estates, guardianships, and trusts. He makes findings of facts and issues orders in cases involving the involuntary hospitalization of the mentally ill, applications for name changes, will contests, wrongful death settlements, settlements involving injuries to minors, adoptions and other civil suits. The Probate Court also issues marriage licenses.
